Welds – Ground Smooth, Raised or Poor
Reactive Weld Material
It is not uncommon where a welding consumable is used that this can affect the coating finish of the weld as most welding electrodes generally have a high silicone content. As a result the weld metal deposited may be significantly more reactive than the parent metal, leading to an increased coating thickness locally at the weld.
Whilst this issue is purely aesthetic it may be avoided by ensuring the welding consumable matches the parent steel or by using low silicone welding products.
Care should also be taken when grinding this area as in some cases where it has been ground flush this can lead poor weld penetration, cracks in the weld and potentially chemical ingress and weep. Furthermore coarse grinding can lead to a rough surface finish.
