Material With Internal Paint Contamination

Galvanizing is a metallurgical reaction where zinc and steel combine to form the coating. The steel surfaces must be perfectly clean for this to happen.

Material with internal paint contamination is a major headache for galvanizers as this must all be removed prior to our process starting.

Historically, we could remove paint from this type of article by burning it off in the molten zinc bath, followed by stripping the excess zinc off then pickling the material. However recent changes to environmental legislation and new chemical control procedures within our process mean we are unable to clean material using this method and can now only remove paint contamination if it is within our blasting capabilities.

Illustrated above are some common types of material with paint contamination on them that we are now unable to process.

The internal and external paint contamination on these types of articles will have to be removed prior to galvanizing by either shotblasting or chemical stripping. This will then allow our acid pickling to clean your material and for the zinc to react to form the galvanized coating.

Please ensure your material has no paint contamination internally and has been either completely shot-blasted or chemically stripped prior to arrival. Should you have such material please contact our design team for advice on what to do before sending it for galvanizing.
