Double Dipping

At Highland, we want to give you the best coating finish possible and it is our aim to educate and provide awareness to our customers. The purpose of this information is to provide specific guidance, targeted at areas within the fabrication process, that will lead to a better understanding of the finished product. Anything that is made of mild steel can be galvanized but occasionally when an item is too long or too high to be dipped in one go into the molten zinc bath it is known, in the galvanizing industry, as double dipping.

How Does Double Dipping Work?

This procedure involves dipping the majority of the item then turning it around and dipping the second part to match the join, as illustrated. The process leaves a small virtually unnoticeable join where the two dips have overlapped which fades over time.

Galvanizing Bath Dimensions

At Elgin –
10.5m long x 2.5m deep x 1.1m wide

At Cumbernauld –
7m long x 3m deep x 1.2m wide

The size of the material that can be double dipped does depend on the length and depth of the item in comparison with the dimension of the galvanizing bath.
