| Process | Type of varnish derived from the secretion of an insect, and most commonly used for decorating timbers. Usually dissolved in alcohol and after application the alcohol evaporates leaving a hard coating. The term shellac is often used in error to describe other clear solvent based finishes. Can be brush, roller or spray applied. Sometimes used as a temporary coating on pipes. |
