Process Type of varnish derived from the secretion of an insect, and most commonly used for decorating timbers.
Usually dissolved in alcohol and after application the alcohol evaporates leaving a hard coating. The term shellac is often used in error to describe other clear solvent based finishes. Can be brush, roller or spray applied. Sometimes used as a temporary coating on pipes.
Strengths Not easily obtained in its real form, and not very durable. Unsuitable for large areas or quantities.
Weaknesses High toxicity makes it unavailable nowadays.
Durability Not very good. Only suitable for goods being handled gently.
